How A Ground Heat Pump Works?
Ground heat pump uses pipes which are buried under the ground to extract the heat. The pipe is typically used to warm water for underground heating systems and also radiators. Besides, it can also be used to pre-warm water before sending the chilled water into a conventional boiler.
Did you ever wonder how a ground heat pump works? Well, it is in fact simple. The pump loops a mixture of water and antifreeze around a loop pipe which is called the ground loop. This ground loop is usually buried underground. The heat is absorbed from the ground when the liquid moves around the ground loop, making the underground floors and radiators being heated. The length of the loop depends on the area of the location and the amount of heat required. Longer loops of ground loop can extract more heat from the ground and hence being able to cater heat to a larger area. The loop is usually laid flat or covered with trenches of coils for about 2 meters deep.
There is a method used to measure the efficiency of the pump. It is measured by a coefficient of performance (CoP) where it compares the amount of heat produced to the amount of electricity used to generate the heat. A normal CoP for this pump is approximately 3.2 with other external factors being neglected.
Well, there are several benefits attainable if you consider using ground heat pump for your personal application. Firstly, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to green house effect. Next, you need not pay for any fuel to produce heat anymore, where it directly cancels your fuel bill. And lastly, this pump can reduce wastage of electricity as well. With high efficiency, less electricity is used to generate more heat and therefore less electricity is wasted.
