how do passive infrared detectors operate?
What environmental variables must be considered to assure proper operation?
PIRs sense time-delta gradients in heat across multiple zones, so the proper operation is sensitive to background thermal motion (transmitted or reflected), generally high ambient temperatures, among other things. They are not good at sensing very slow or very fast changes.
This could be re-asked in the Engineering section with perhaps better results.
